Saturday 23 March 2024 at 2pm – Castle Hall, Dublin Castle, Dublin 2
From the criticism of rococo in the 18th century to the modern debates on kitsch and camp, via the declarations of Victor Hugo or Baudelaire in the 19th century, bad taste has long been the subject of debate in literary circles. Criticised by some, it is claimed by others as a positive value. Factor of social distinction, flashy, sentimentalist, commercial, old-fashioned, provocative, politically incorrect, bad taste knows multiple variations. Are our contemporary authors still sensitive to the dangers - or the attraction - of bad taste?
Guests: Emmanuelle Bayamack-Tam, Mahi Binebine, Diarmuid Johnson.
Moderator: Jean-Michel Picard
